Karl served as a member of the St. Petersburg City Council from 2008 to 2017, and was elected Chair of the Council in 2013. During his tenure, Karl passed over 60 proposals to encourage energy efficiency in city operations, spark a renewal in our inner city, promote affordable housing, use city budget and contracting to increase and improve local jobs and improve governmental efficiency.

Karl has been a civic activist over 40 years.  He led many organizations including Old Southeast Neighborhood Association (6 years), Council of Neighborhood Associations (3 years), Pinellas Living Green Expo (5 years) and a number of Chamber of Commerce committees.  He served on the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority Board (vice chair), St. Petersburg Planning Commission (Chair), and the St. Petersburg Historic Preservation Commission (Chair).  He currently serves as a member of the Citizen’s Advisory Committee of the South St. Petersburg CRA (Community Redevelopment Area), on a number of non-profit housing organization leadership teams, and on the boards of The Sierra Club, the 2020 Plan, and the Florida Orchestra (as Treasurer).

In Karl’s youth, he worked as a legislative aide in the State House for 2 years and in the State Senate for 4 years.

Karl started, with his partner and bride, Bay Tech Label in 1986 and today employs 45 people in the Gateway area of St. Petersburg.
